The Effects of Social Media on Interpersonal Relationships
Can social media influence interpersonal relationships? In modern society, social networks have become an integral part of our lives. They provide a convenient platform for communication, information exchange and contact support with friends and family. However, their impact on interpersonal relationships is causing more discussion. Although many people believe that social networks have little influence on our relationships, digital platforms have integrated into society imperceptibly and just as they have a very strong influence on human connections. In this essay, I will examine the positive and negative aspects of the influence of social media on our relationships, supported by examples and statistics.
First positive aspect is that social media reduces geographic and social barriers, allowing us to easily connect with people from different countries and cultures and strengthen existing relationships. They broaden our social circle and provide an opportunity to learn about a variety of opinions and ideas. According to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center, 72% of adult internet users utilize these platforms to maintain connections with friends and family (by Russell Heimlich, 2011). Social networks also allow us to find new friends. For instance, my brother found people who liked the same things he does. Therefore, social media acts as a catalyst for intellectual growth and cultural enrichment.
One of the negative aspects is the growing trend where people prefer to communicate through text messages or comments on social media rather than engaging in in-person conversations. Spending too much time on online social spaces is associated with feelings of loneliness and a lack of emotional support. Furthermore, spending excessive time in the virtual realm of social networks can lead to a decline in essential interpersonal communication skills, such as active listening, non-verbal cues interpretation, and the ability to express oneself clearly and empathetically. Examples of this can be observed in everyday life. Young people spend an average of over 3 hours a day on social media, which leads to a reduction in time available for real-world interactions. Consequently, there is a risk of losing the skills related to face-to-face communication, including emotional connection, which is crucial element of interaction and building deep relationships.
Another negative aspect of the impact of social media is its effect on self-esteem and psychological well-being. The idealized images and ideal lives presented on social media can leave people feeling inadequate compared to others. It is a well-known fact that social media can create an illusion of happiness and success, leading individuals to compare their lives with those of others, which can impact their self-worth and overall well-being. A study conducted by the Pew Research Center in the United States showed that over 50% of social media users experienced negative emotions such as a sense of envy and dissatisfaction with their own lives after using social networks (ND). For that reason, social networks have a very detrimental effect on a person’s mental state.
In conclusion, social media has both positive and negative effects on interpersonal relationships and and mental health. While they can be useful tools for maintaining connections and expanding social networks, excessive use or an unhealthy attitude toward them can lead to a disconnect from real-life interactions and negative consequences. Despite the negative aspects, it's important to note that social media is not entirely detrimental. They offer numerous opportunities for establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships when used consciously and in moderation. This includes taking measures such as setting limits on usage, being mindful of the content consumed, and using social media to enhance real-world relationships. It is essential to find a balance and use social media consciously. Only by doing so can we resist the influence of web communities, maintain high-quality interpersonal relationships, and ensure our psychological well-being.
